Jianping, L., Minrong, L., Jinnan, W., Jianjian, L., Hongwen, S., Maoxing, H.: Report on Global Environment Competitiveness of Chile, 2014, Current Chinese Economic Report Series. ![]() Ocean power is far superior to geothermal energy and comparable to wind power and for this reason it should be considered together with nuclear power for the future Chilean energy matrix. Large hydro power plants rank very high but in light of the social opposition present in the country, they might not be easy to build as hoped. This study shows that biomasses are the best compromise solution and that traditional and modern nuclear energy plants score consistently better than solar power. Since Chile’s energy production matrix still relies heavily on fossil fuels with major concerns of GHG emissions, all major potential energy sources in Chile are considered including ocean energy in addition to nuclear energy. Nine major criteria are critically used for this purpose and prioritized using analytical hierarchical process (AHP). ![]() Since all evaluations are provided via intervals, the possible degree theory is used to compare them. This study aims to provide a quantitative analysis for the selection of the most sustainable energy production methods using the compromise ranking method (VIKOR) that uses maximum group utility for the majority and a minimum of individual regret for the opponent. Renewable energy sources are considered the main drive for developing by 2050 at least 70% of the total energy in Chile. In this sense, that social innovation view-point allowed for a contribution in the debate on a theme as crucial as energy is.Chile’s 2050 energy policy ultimate goals are to produce a sustainable model of economic growth respectful of the environment where energy is produced efficiently and reliably. Energy and water do not just have a connection with greater economic development, but are also related to education, culture, social development, and the inhabitants and communities near the projects’ locations. This proposes a result that is not just shared, but also communicated to society and translated from complex to simple terms.įinally, it highlights the importance of delivering a political perspective on social processes and infrastructure projects. That is, getting to know those alternative technologies that could provide a solution to the current deficit and the water future faced by the northern and central regions of Chile. In the same way, the innovative methodology of Escenarios Energéticos 2030 contributed to the creation of consciousness and a more mature debate, with a long-term perspective, involving the citizenry and which can also be applied to water issues. The Escenarios Energéticos 2030 initiative has completed a cycle, promoting the creation of confidence and the broad exchange of knowledge in an open and transparent debate to define the energy matrix Chile needs, what externalities need to be taken on, and which ones remain unfinished. This experience, through dialogue and participative construction, has reached two strategic objectives: the construction and discussion of different electricity generation scenarios by the year 2030, and the generation of tools for the formulation of an energy policy. ![]() In this context, the Escenarios Energéticos 2030 initiative began in 2009 as a social innovation to propel the development of a sustainable energy future for Chile, which has been replicated in Argentina and Brazil.įundación Chile, along with other organizations from the business sector, academia, and civil society, were all active participants in Escenarios Energéticos 2030, which has finished a cycle of six years. The energy sector in Chile faces a major challenge that keeps on repeating itself worldwide: the association of major topics involving non-conventional renewable energies, energy security, decreasing electricity prices, energy efficiency, and citizen involvement.
